Perseverance in Spite of Myself
I’ve been accused of being a pit bull. Not that I look like a pit bull, but that I’m as tenacious as a pit bull. Once I sink my teeth into something, I don’t let go.
That’s the same attitude I need to take with writing my book. Dig my teeth in and don’t stop until it’s done. One of the ways I’m accomplishing this is to carry a notebook at all times. Capturing a fleeting thought and saving it for later development is a key to the creativity that I’m trying to unlock. For years I’ve known I had great ideas, but by not writing them down, I missed the opportunity presented to me by my subconscious. Tapping into that inner source is critical in the development of my story and bringing it to life.
The other thing is to quit worrying about it. It’s hard not to beat myself up over missed opportunities. Those thoughts and ideas from the past are just random molecules floating around in my head. NOW is the time to grab life by the throat and hang on. Start writing today. The odds are in your favor that the two molecules with that great idea will collide in your head one day. I mean, really, you only have so many brain cells! Be prepared to write it down when it happens. Train yourself now to create the habit of success. It doesn’t just happen. It takes effort on your part to make it happen.
I find that there are many obstacles that get in the way of writing. Work, play, family, friends, and sickness: the list goes on and on. Life just seems to take up a lot of time. But the desire to take those wonderful ideas floating around in the gray space between my ears motivates me to keep going. Finding the time in my never-ending busy days to write down my thoughts, dreams, and stories to share with the world is my new goal.
So, I guess being a pit bull isn’t so bad. I could be a poodle.
